MSU Parents: How to Spend a Fall Weekend in Bozeman & Belgrade

Visiting your Montana State University student this fall? You’re in luck – it’s a truly magical season in southwestern Montana. Autumn paints the Gallatin Valley in brilliant golds and reds, while Bozeman and Belgrade offer an ideal blend of outdoor adventure, local flavors, and small-town charm that makes for an unforgettable weekend.

From cozy cafes in the bustling downtown area to scenic hikes showcasing Montana’s stunning fall foliage, you’ll get a true taste of what makes this corner of Big Sky Country so special – and understand exactly why your student loves calling it home. Here’s exactly how we’d recommend you spend a fall weekend in Bozeman and Belgrade.

Day 1: Friday

Grab Brunch at Duke’s Cafe & Bakery

Belgrade has a variety of excellent cafes, and Duke’s Cafe & Bakery (Duke’s for short) is a fan favorite! They serve fantastic coffee, savory hand pies, and an assortment of delicious baked goods – add in the cozy atmosphere, and there’s a reason why it’s so popular.

Go for a Hike in Belgrade

The Bridger Mountains are practically Belgrade’s backyard, so you might as well explore them! There are all different hikes to suit your needs, whether you’d prefer something flat and relaxing or challenging with lots of elevation gain.

Here are some hikes to choose from:

Erwin Bridge Fishing Access: An assortment of flat, short, and easy trails along the Gallatin River; the groves of cottonwoods and aspen trees are stunning in the fall.

  • Middle Cottonwood Trail: This trail winds along a river in a forest with a little more elevation gain than Erwin Bridge.
  • Sypes Canyon Trail: A more difficult trail that affords gorgeous views of the Gallatin Valley; the grove of aspens just past the overlook turn a beautiful golden yellow during autumn.

Snag Lunch at Cafe Havana

This unique restaurant is a must-try in Downtown Belgrade! Cafe Havana is a coffeehouse serving specialty coffee drinks and latin fusion food (like grilled arepas with assorted toppings) along with tried-and-true classics (like a turkey bacon avocado sandwich on a croissant).

Visit the Museum of the Rockies

Everyone loves the Museum of the Rockies (located south of Downtown Bozeman), and for good reason! There are exhibits on dinosaurs (everyone’s favorite), a planetarium, and plenty of history about the Gallatin Valley. Walk Around Downtown Bozeman

Downtown Bozeman has plenty to do, from shopping to happy hours to activities like bowling. Or you can simply walk around and enjoy the old Western architecture! The Gallatin History Museum’s historic walking map guides visitors to fascinating sites like the former county jail, sharing captivating stories and fun facts about each location’s past.

Get Dinner & Drinks at Sky Shed

For spectacular Bozeman vistas, Sky Shed is tough to beat – try to arrive while there’s still daylight if you can! The spot provides an incredible sunset experience, and when weather permits, their rooftop patio is absolutely amazing.

Day 2: Saturday

Order Breakfast at Jam!

Get there early – Jam! is a classic brunch spot in Downtown Bozeman, and it gets busy fast. The establishment draws both locals and visitors with hearty, home-style favorites like fluffy omelets, creamy biscuits and gravy, and loaded hash browns piled high with cheese and bacon.

If Jam is too busy, other downtown favorites include Brigade, The Western Cafe, and Fielding’s.

Explore the MSU Campus

Curious about what your student gets up to at school? Now you’ll get to find out! Have them show you around the MSU campus and get to live a day in the life. Let them take you to their favorite study spots in the library, grab lunch at their go-to dining hall, and walk the same paths they take between classes.

You might discover hidden campus gems you never knew existed, from cozy reading nooks to scenic overlooks with mountain views. It’s a chance to see the university through their eyes and understand what makes their college experience special.

Head to a Cat’s Game

Cheering the ​​Bobcats to victory is a right of passage, and fortunately, plenty of home games are scheduled throughout the fall season. The entire town comes alive on game days, with tailgates filling the parking lots and school spirit on full display throughout Bozeman.

If you’re here during a Cats vs. Griz game (from the rival University of Montana), consider yourself lucky – things are about to get rowdy and very entertaining!

Take a Walk at Peet’s Hill

Peet’s Hill shows off some Bozeman’s best views – and the best part? It’s right in town! After walking up a short hill (hence the name), you’ll come to a fairly flat 2-mile loop trail with fantastic views of the Gallatin Valley. You may love it so much you’ll want to return for sunrise or sunset!

Happy Hour at Devil’s Toboggan

Escape the game day crowds by heading to The Cannery District! This cozy area has an assortment of restaurants and bars, and we recommend grabbing Happy Hour drinks at Devil’s Toboggan, a unique speakeasy-inspired bar.

With its dimly lit ambiance, creative drink menu, and sophisticated vibe, Devil’s Toboggan provides an ideal spot to unwind. If you’re hungry, they’ve got great snacks too – the pretzel bites sound boring, but we assure you they’re amazing!

Eat Dinner at Shan

Shan is an Asian fusion restaurant in The Cannery, and people absolutely rave about it. The menu expertly blends traditional Asian flavors with contemporary cooking techniques, creating dishes that are both familiar and innovative.

Since it opened in 2023, it’s been fully booked – reservations book up in advance, especially on weekends, so make sure to secure your spot early! The restaurant’s intimate atmosphere and consistently exceptional service have made it a standout dining destination that keeps guests coming back for more.

Day 3: Sunday

Order Pastries at Wild Crumb & Coffee at Treeline

Start the day the best way: with a freshly baked pastry and a coffee, of course! Wild Crumb’s line often goes out the door, especially on weekends, and you’ll soon discover why. The pastries are next level and it’s conveniently located near Treeline Coffee Roasters, meaning you can grab a bite AND an excellent cup of coffee practically in one go.

If it’s nice out, there are tons of tables outside both Wild Crumb and Treeline; when it’s chilly out, both also offer ample indoor seating space. Plus, you’ll get to explore Bozeman’s Northside neighborhood, a charming area just north of downtown.

Head to Hyalite Reservoir

Hyalite is stunning all year round, but we especially love the fall colors! You’ll see pops of gold the entire drive up (about 30 minutes from Downtown Bozeman), thanks to the aspens and cottonwoods lining the river.

The reservoir itself is gorgeous, and if the weather is nice, you’ll be happy you brought food for a picnic. Pro tip: Grab a sandwich to go at Fink’s Delicatessen, located right next to Wild Crumb. It’s one of the best places to eat in Bozeman! There are several picnic tables around the Hyalite Day Use Area (next to the Hyalite Pavilion) overlooking the reservoir.

Once at the reservoir, you can either relax or soak in the views before heading back to town, or you can take a leisurely stroll to Grotto Falls. It’s a short, 2.5-mile out-and-back walk that’s relatively flat. You can also walk the flat path along the lake, called the Westshore and Crescent Lake Loop Trail.

Soak at Bozeman Hot Springs

After your Hyalite adventure, make a detour to Bozeman Hot Springs for a relaxing soak. The facility features a dozen pools with different temperature options, making it tempting to linger for hours.

J.W. Heist Steakhouse

After you’ve enjoyed your soak, head to dinner at J.W. Heist Steakhouse. There’s no better way to enjoy your last night in town than enjoying what Montana is known for – beef! This upscale steakhouse, located downtown, certainly delivers.

Bozeman Fall Events to Plan Around

Bridger Raptor Festival: October 4-5, 2025

Experience the largest Golden Eagle migration in the United States at the Bridger Raptor Festival! Located at the beautiful Bridger Bowl Ski Area, the views themselves are gorgeous – you’ll also have the chance to learn about local raptor migrations, and can even hike up to an observation deck atop the Bridger Mountains!
