Ask anyone – Montana is truly magical in the winter. Picture snow-covered rooftops, frosty trees, and the profound peace that settles over the state this time of year.
Despite all of the wonderful things about winter, we understand this colder season can seem intimidating if you’re coming from a warmer climate. However, with the right mindset and preparation, you’ll discover why so many of us believe winter is when Montana truly shines.
Are Montana Winters Really That Bad?
Newcomers often discover that Montana winters are actually more manageable than expected, especially in the Gallatin Valley where Belgrade sits. Yes, our winters are cold and snowy, but they’re also dry and sunny. We average 186 days of sunshine per year, which makes the cold far more tolerable than the damp, gray winters of the Pacific Northwest or Midwest.
Plus, Montanans don’t hide inside for six months. We ski, snowshoe, ice fish, and gather around fire pits. We invest in good gear and dress in layers. This makes winter less of an obstacle and more of an adventure, and much more enjoyable (it may even become your new favorite season).
Living at Prescott Ranch even gives you a head start – modern construction means better insulation and energy efficiency.
Preparing for Winter Driving in Montana
Driving in the winter really isn’t bad if you’re properly prepared. Here’s what you should do:
- Purchase good winter tires, and make an appointment to get them installed in late October.
- Keep a snow scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter for traction, blankets, water, snacks, and a first-aid kit in your vehicle.
- Switch out your washer fluid with something made for cold temperatures (like -30F), and preferably de-icer, to prevent the fluid from freezing.
- Slow down when driving in winter conditions (and especially while turning) – drive like you have a cake sitting in your backseat.
Master the Art of Layering
First and foremost, you’ll want a warm winter jacket. Top and bottom base layers made of wool or synthetic materials are helpful for outdoor activities – avoid cotton. A warm hat, wool socks, and thick gloves are important too.
Grab some insulated boots with traction on the soles to keep your feet warm and help prevent slippage. Microspikes can help with this too. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen! Like we mentioned before, we get plenty of sunny winter days too.
Remember: there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.

Embrace Winter Activities
The fastest way to stop dreading winter is to find reasons to get outside and have a blast. And fortunately, the Gallatin Valley offers world-class winter recreation right in your backyard.
- Skiing and snowboarding at Bridger Bowl (just 30 minutes from Prescott Ranch) or Big Sky Resort (just an hour from Prescott Ranch).
- Cross-country skiing on one of the free groomed trails in Bozeman thanks to the Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF). Check out the map and grooming status before heading out.
- Snowshoeing or hiking on nearby trails, like North Cottonwood or Sypes Canyon.

Attend Winter Events
Belgrade doesn’t shut down in winter! In fact, it does the exact opposite, and the community comes alive in different ways. Here are just a few of the events locals love:
- Watch the Christmas Convoy, a parade of trucks lit up with Christmas lights that drive through Belgrade every year in early December.
- Check out Belgrade’s free Festival of Lights, an annual event typically taking place in mid-December, which features a Jingle Jog, ugly outfit contest, holiday market, and more!
- Head to nearby Bozeman for the annual Christmas Stroll, usually in early December, which features vendors, food trucks, holiday treats, Christmas carols, and more.
- Check out the Winter Art Walk in Bozeman, a night where local artists display their art in downtown businesses, which often offer complimentary snacks and drinks.
- Catch a live show or concert put on by the Bozeman Symphony, The Montana Ballet Company, The Elm, or The Ellen Theatre.

Get Cozy Indoors
Fortunately, both Belgrade and nearby Bozeman offer plenty of exciting indoor activities. Here are a few that locals enjoy:
- Dining at The Mint or The Local in Belgrade, or one of Bozeman’s many restaurants.
- Enjoying a cup of coffee at Cafe Havana, Duke’s Cafe and Bakery, or Revamped Coffee Co.
- Grabbing a drink at Madison River Brewing or Bar-3-BBQ.
- Playing a round at 406 Golf in Belgrade’s downtown area.
